HORTEN, NorwayRepsol Norge has commissioned Vissim to deliver a new oil spill detection for use at the Yme Field in the eastern Norwegian North Sea.

It will be installed on the Inspirer production jackup located 160 km northeast of the Ekofisk Field.

Vissim’s system image processing technology is said to detect smaller oil spills. It also uses machine learning to classify detected phenomena, preventing false alarms, which has been a concern with radar-based oil spill detection systems.

Norway’s oil spill monitoring and detection rules call for operators to employ detection technologies that operate independent of weather conditions. Vissim’s technology is designed for vessel tracking and oil spill detection through the same radar.

Other users on the shelf include Aker BP and Vår Energi.
