RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Petrobras will receive the 2023 OTC Brasil Distinguished Achievement Award in October for a new well construction/intervention development.

This involves the combination of a BOP and real-time riser analysis, enabling use of more modern DP rigs in place of anchored rigs.

According to the company, the technique cuts the duration of interventions in shallow-water wells by seven days, reducing costs and emissions and also the impact of anchoring on the seabed by 99%, when compared to traditional rigs.

It should allow rigs operating in deepwater locations to also perform in shallow water, following adjustment with the BOP anchored for this purpose, including congested or environmentally sensitive offshore areas.

Petrobras has already performed what it claims is the world’s first shallow-water BOP anchorage without the need for anchoring vessels. Another advantage of the technology is said to be a significant increase in the safety of operations.

The company aims to adopt the solution for future projects to revitalize mature oil fields, fulfilling environmental requirements by operating wells with the lowest possible impact.

Petrobras has also revealed that the Petrobras CEO, during his visit to China, has signed various cooperation agreements in the energy sector. These include:

  • An MoU with CNOOC, extending their collaboration and exploring potential for global cooperation oil and gas E&P;
  • An MoU with China Petrochemical Corp. - SINOPEC, on joint research and evaluation of opportunities in Brazil or abroad, in E&P, energy transition and carbon capture projects; and
  • A strategic cooperation framework agreement with China Energy International Group Co. in Brazil, which could include renewable energy generation and the production of sustainable hydrogen and ammonia.
