MUMBAI, India ABS has devised a remote survey for steel certification at a steel mill in Gujarat, India.

This allowed fabricator Lamprell to continue construction on two self-elevating drilling units (SEDUs) in the UAE, despite COVID-19 restrictions.

Lamprell ordered 8,855 metric tons (9,761 tons) of steel for the rigs from Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel Mill.

Due to travel restrictions ABS staff could not certify the steel at the mill in person; instead, the company proposed the remote option, with its surveyors in Mumbai certifying the steel with data provided by the mill.

This allowed work on the tow rigs to process on schedule.
