ABERDEEN, UK – Mexico’s Secretary of Energy (SENER) has designated four European academic institutions to collaborate with Mexican universities to address the future needs of the country’s energy sector.
These areRobert Gordon University (RGU), the University of Aberdeen, Imperial College London, and the IFP School in France.
Mexico’s government is looking to close a skills gap with other countries in the petroleum industry.
RGU will now work with Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo (IMP), Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), and Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey on providing courses for Masters in Drilling & Well Engineering, Offshore Oil & Gas Engineering, and an MBA in Oil & Gas.
In addition, the university will lead development of a Mexico:UK Smart Data for energy Research Centre.
Professor John Harper, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the university, said: “RGU has built an established relationship with Mexico over the last three years after signing the memorandum of understanding with SENER, and has since worked with both governments to understand and recommend the skills and capabilities required to develop an international oil and gas industry.”
The collaboration will likely extend to assisting development of longer-term relationships between governments, trade bodies, industry associations and educational institutions in Mexico and the UK, and transfer experience from the North Sea to support ‘operational excellence’ in both countries.
Aberdeen University will research a thermally-assisted enhanced oil recovery method with Instituto Potosino de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica, and will develop methods for assessing and monitoring the integrity of subsea infrastructure in partnership with Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo (IMP).
It will also deliver an MSc in Subsea Engineering with IMP and will work with the Universidad de las Americas Puebla on a joint program on Oil & Gas Law, and with Instituto de Investigaciones Juiridicas and Institutio Teconologico Autonomo de Mexico on a research project on Hydrocarbon Law.
