DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Aramco has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corp. (NSSMC), Sumitomo Corp., and Sumitomo Corp. Saudi Arabia.
This concerns a feasibility study for an integrated steel mill to produce steel plates in the Ras al-Khair area.
Ahmad A. Al Sa’adi, Aramco’s svp Technical Services, said: “The presence of the new steel mill will reduce costs, delivery time, and offer better customer service to the local market.”
NSSMC was the world’s second largest steel producer last year, and manufactures steel and finished steel products used in all industries.
Sumitomo, among the world’s oldest and largest integrated trading and investment groups, operates a global network of 139 offices with around 800 consolidated subsidiaries and associated companies.
This project is in support ofSaudi Arabia’s iktva program, intended to increase the local content in Aramco’s supply chain.
Steel plate production is used for manufacturing of pipes, pressure vessels, marine vessels, offshore platforms, and oil and gas infrastructure.
