OSLO, Norway --Norway's government has commissioned a study to investigate the potential for powering offshore production installations directly from land.

The study team will comprise the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, and the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority. They will evaluate the impact of importing power both on new and existing offshore facilities, and on Norway's regional and national electric power balance.

Research institutes, industry, and relevant voluntary organizations will also be invited to provide input. The study, due to be completed by the end of this year, will update work undertaken by NPD and others in 2002.
