EDINBURGH, UK --Gateway Storage has submitted a planning application to build a gas compression station next to Centrica's South Morecambe gas terminal in northwest England.

The station would compress gas flowing from Gateway's proposed seabed storage facility in the Irish Sea, 15 mi (24 km) offshore Barrow-in-Furness.

In October and November, Gateway submitted a separate application to the UK government for this project, which would involve conversion of an offshore subterranean salt cavern and installation of an export pipeline to shore.

The company says its proposal minimizes noise levels in the area, and includes measures such as planting of new woodland, in keeping with the area's natural habitat.

Assuming approval from Barrow Borough Council, Gateway aims to start construction in 2008, with a view to starting storage services during winter 2011/12.
