Statoil gears up for further exploration

Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority has approved StatoilHydro's application to drill an exploration well in the Barents Sea, using the semisub Polar Pioneer.

STAVANGER, Norway --Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority has approved StatoilHydro's application to drill an exploration well in the Barents Sea, using the semisub Polar Pioneer.

Well 722/6-1 is to be drilled northeast of Snøhvit in production license 228, in 364 m (1,194 ft) of water. Drilling should take around 50 days.

StatoilHydro has further expanded its exploration options offshore Norway by signing a letter of intent for six seismic acquisition vessels, with a total contract value of $328 million.

Secured capacity comprises PGS'Ramform Challenger, Ramform Sovereign, and Atlantic Explorer; Fugro Geoteam's Geo Celtic; Wavefield Inseis' Geowave Commander; and Western Geco's Geco Triton.

StatoilHydro's seismic acquisition program off Norway next year will include around 6,000 sq km (2,317 sq mi) of 3D surveys and 2,500 sq km (965 sq mi) of 4D surveys.
