WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Ocean Industries Association has awarded Shell Oil Co. the 2010 Safety in Seas Award for its "outstanding contribution to the safety of life offshore for energy workers in the design and execution of the Perdido project" in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Shell went over and above the minimum requirements and exceeded the industry standards to ensure that Perdido was the safest possible project it could be," said Randall Luthi, NOIA president.

A panel of judges from the US Coast Guard, the Minerals Management Service, and the National Academy of Science's Marine Board determine the winner from among the nominations.
