Offshore staff
LONDON -- Engineering contractor Offshore Design Engineering (ODE) and Scottish construction company Burntisland Fabrications (BiFab) have agreed to jointly pursue UK offshore oil and gas turnkey design and build (EPC) contracts.
BiFab will be the main contractor responsible for fabrication and bulk procurement while ODE will be responsible for engineering and procurement of major equipment items. The two companies are already collaborating on various contracts incurring total capital expenditure of close to $152 million, and plan to strengthen their ties by establishing integrated teams ready to compete for emerging projects in UK waters and elsewhere in Europe.
According to Peter Godfrey, ODE’s managing director: “At ODE, we have over 30 years experience in engineering, procurement, and project management. In addition, our expertise in hook-up and commissioning and in operations support can also be brought into play; these provide the client with opportunities to reduce the risk of cost escalation by minimizing interfaces and maintaining project knowledge as their facility moves into operation."
BiFab has delivered structures for the oil and gas industry over the past 20 years. It operates three facilities in Scotland with the capacity to deliver over 60,000 metric tons/yr (66,138 tons/yr) of fabrications. The company’s Managing Director John Robertson says: “We are seeing a considerable upturn in the oil and gas sector.” The new partners foresee several new major UK EPC projects coming up in 2010.
ODE is owned jointly by Saipem (50%) and Doris Engineering (50%). Its recent and current contracts include the FEED for Total’s Laggan-Tormore development West of Shetland (subsea facilities, pipelines, onshore terminal, and associated works); conceptual engineering for Centrica’s Baird gas storage development in the East Irish Sea; UK Southern Gas Basin operations management Services, and associated engineering support for both E.ON Ruhrgas and RWE.
