ULSAN, South Korea -- Korea National Oil Co. and PetroVietnam have begun gas production from the Rong Doi gas field in the Indian Ocean southeast of Vietnam.

Gas produced from the field will be supplied to power stations across Vietnam, while oil will be exported to neighboring nations such as China, KNOC says. Korea could also import the energy products.

Average daily production amounts to 5% of Korea's consumption of LNG.

The Rong Doi gas field contains an estimated 19 MM tonnes of gas and 23 MMbbl of light oil. It is expected to produce 4,200 b/d of oil for the next two decades, the company says.

The consortium began exploration work in May 1992, discovering the Rong Doi (Twin Dragon) and Rong Doi Tay (Twin Dragon West) fields in the Nam Con Son basin in March of 2003.

The Korean conrsortium headed by KNOC has a 75% stake in the field, with the balance held by PetroVietnam.
