Shell signed a $125-million project agreement with Aker Kværner and Statkraft to explore possible large-scale applications of zero-emission, solid oxide fuel-cell technology driven by natural gas for offshore and onshore application. A project team from the three companies will perform a pilot study to explore the technology's potential. Shell and its partners said it plans to complete the project by 2010. They expect it to be the first in the world to develop and commercialize large-scale, multi-megawatt fuel cells of this type. This technology has been developed by Shell Hydrogen, in consultation with Siemens Westinghouse.
