Schlumberger has introduced a new product called FlexSTONE HT, a flexible cement that is an extension of the FlexSTONE advanced cement system for permanent zonal isolation of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
The company has increased the temperature and flexibility range of the set cement system, which it says provides excellent mechanical properties at 40° F to 482° F. Operators can reliably seal deeper, hotter, more complex wells to achieve maximum production from the reservoir, the company says.
"The FlexSTONE HT advanced cement system is designed in synergy with downhole rock properties and to endure dynamic downhole conditions, such as variable pressures and temperatures, some of which can be caused by downhole testing and treatments or formation loading," Sandra Aldana, cementing business development manager, Schlumberger, says.
Researchers at Schlumberger adapted the unique capabilities of the CemCRETE family of cements to create the new system, which uses flexible and expansive materials. The technology increases a slurry's solids content by using optimized particle size distribution. With up to 2% cement expansion, operators can prestress the new cement, which enables the sheath to close a microannulus several hundred microns in size, potentially sealing fluid leak paths, Schlumberger says.
