Sandvik Steel has introduced a new stainless steel alloy to meet the needs of well service companies operating sour wells at greater depths. The Sanicro 26Mo (UNS SO98926) contains high levels of molybdenum and nitrogen and, according to Sandvik, exceptional tensile strength (1,585 Mpa min/230 ksi min). It also offers sturdy resistance in sour wells against corrosion cracking and good corrosion resistance in chloride-bearing environments. The new wirelines are available in weld-free lengths up to 30,000 ft in standard industry diameters.

At Sandvik's Chomutov plant in the Czech Republic, the company is now able to produce stainless steel tubing up to 3-in. ID, joint welded and supplied on reels in lengths up to 25 km. Typical applications are umbilicals, flowlines, risers and downhole duty.

Recent deliveries include 256 km of super duplex umbilical tubing for Shell's Conger and Malapaya projects (with respective diameters of 0.5 and 0.7-in.) This February, Sandvik completed a 33 km order for 2-in. ID, SAF 2507 super duplex stainless steel tubing for the Girassol riser tower service lines. It also supplied tubing for umbilicals to Kvaerner for BP Amoco South Everest (UK North Sea) and Exxon Mica (Gulf of Mexico).
