Ingersoll-Rand Productivity Solutions’ new heavy-duty impact tools, grinders designed for hefty applications, including offshore tasks
The Ingersoll-Rand Productivity Solutions business unit of Ingersoll-Rand Co. is helping its parent corporation celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2005 with the debut of two new series of power tools for heavy- duty industrial applications, including those found aboard ocean-going vessels and on offshore drilling rigs and production platforms.
New this year to the company’s full line of air-motor power tool products is the 3900Ti Series of titanium industrial impact tools, a standout set of impacts that the company believes will lead the power tool industry in performance and strength.
The use of titanium as part of the tool body in each model of the 3900Ti Series reduces its weight while increasing its resilience, making it ideal for use in nearly any impact situation, the company says.
Each of the 3900Ti Series tools weighs between 21-23 lbs. All are capable of providing maximum forward torque from 500 to 2,750 ft/lbs, and a powerful 500 to 3,250 ft/lbs of reverse torque, which the company says is a 10-15% performance increase compared to competing models. Additionally, the engines incorporated into 3900Ti Series impact tools - with 7-vane rotors with a 75- to 95-cfm output range - offer improved airflow through the impact mechanism.
Lighter, stronger casing
The tool’s titanium hammer casing - further hardened through a proprietary in-house process - gives it long-life durability. What’s more, reverse-biased brass endplates improve the tool’s resistance to corrosion, particularly in salt-corrosive environments such as those found offshore. According to the company, the impact tool’s twin-hammer mechanism is the strongest, most durable and longest lasting of its type in the industry.
Designed for challenging applications, including close work in restricted areas, the tool’s integrated reverse lever protects it from rough handling, and its muffler system reduces noise levels significantly. Other key features include reduced vibration, an ergonomic handle for a better “fit” in operators’ hands, and laser-etched product information that lasts the life of the tool.
Ingersoll-Rand is the pioneer of the impact tool market, leading the marketplace in design and development of the broadest impact tool selection in the world. However, it takes a leading position in other kinds of hand-held, air-powered tools, as well.
The Productivity Solutions unit recently introduced a new line of industrial grinders, the G-Series, designed to uphold Ingersoll-Rand’s long-standing commitment to offer reliable and durable grinding equipment. The three models in the new series - the G1, G2 and G3 - are designed to handle a wide variety of grinding, cutting and material removal tasks.
The three ‘G’s
The compact G1 operates at 0.4 hp, making it ideal for removing light material, cleaning welds, deburring parts, milling down sharp edges and other finishing tasks. Available in straight, angle and extended straight configurations, the G1 Series packs a lot of power in a small package.
The G2 Series, slightly larger, performs at an even more impressive 0.8 hp, which is suited for heavier-duty grinding, cleaning, and polishing applications. The G2 grinder also has an angle head option rated for 2,000-plus hours of use, and is available in straight, extended straight, angle, and extended angle configurations.
Finally, the G3 Series, built for the biggest jobs - heavy material removal with burs, grinding wheels, and coated abrasives - offers a full 1.38 hp, giving it a significant power-to-weight ratio. Other G3 features include fully adjustable power with an internal contamination-free air controller that maintains tool speed regardless of the load. Like the G2, the G3 offers an angle head rated for 2,000-plus hours of use and is available in angle and extended angle configurations.
Each G-Series grinder is fitted with an ergonomic, D-shaped handle for more comfortable operation, and exhibits minimal noise/vibration. A separate replaceable cylinder and 1-nut removal for convenient motor repair assures the owner of a long service life. This easy serviceability, coupled with increased power and higher productivity per man-hour, help reduce ownership costs, as well.
