OSLO, Norway  The Norwegian government has decided to rename the two main agencies liaising with the country’s oil and gas sector to reflect their growing remit.

From Jan. 1, 2024, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) will be known as the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, while the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) will be renamed the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority.

"These name changes are a recognition of the important work done by the directorate and the authority in developing transport and storage of CO2, offshore wind and seabed minerals," said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The NPD has mapped potential CO2 storage sites on the Norwegian shelf and assists the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in CO2 sequestration strategy. The PSA is working on establishing HSE regulations for Norway’s fledgling offshore wind industry.
