OSLO, NorwayDNV will acquire Amsterdam-based cyber security specialist Applied Risk.

The goal is to form the world’s largest industrial cyber security practice, helping to protect infrastructure in the energy and other industrial sectors from cyber threats.

Threats are said to be increasing in regularity and becoming more complex, with the energy sector among the top three targeted industries, according to insurance firm Hiscox.

Security of the renewables sector is also under review after researchers from the University of Tulsa demonstrated in 2017 how to hack a wind farm.

They managed to access an unsupervised wind turbine, exposing vulnerabilities that could give them full remote control of the mechanics of an entire wind farm and the potential to destroy all its turbines.
