Shell, Equinor form inventory management co-operation

Shell and Equinor have agreed to jointly develop the next generation of Shell Inventory Optimiser.

STAVANGER, NorwayShell and Equinor have agreed to jointly develop the next generation of Shell Inventory Optimiser.

The solution is said to use apply advanced to historical data to optimize spare part inventory levels.

Under a recent strategic alliance with Shell, Microsoft will support the two operators on development of the tool, which runs on Microsoft Azure.

Their goals are better control over available equipment and optimizing stock levels.

Since 2017, Shell has deployed the proprietary solution globally across its upstream, manufacturing, and integrated gas facilities.

In March 2020, the company and Equinor signed a digital collaboration agreement to co-operate on certain digital projects, and the next-generation solution is the first collaboration under this agreement.

A joint engineering team of digital and discipline specialists from Shell, Equinor, and Microsoft will manage the development.

According to Equinor, the tool integrates Microsoft Azure Machine Learning, Azure Databricks and Azure Datalake and will be enhanced with new features to optimize the algorithm.

The company hopes to save costs through reducing inventory inflow by 13%.

Microsoft will also work with the partners on the next evolution of Shell Inventory Optimiser, running on Microsoft Azure.
