ANCHORAGE, Alaska –The Minerals Management Service has proposed the first lease sale in the Chukchi Sea outer continental shelf since 1991 for Feb. 2008.
Sale 193 contains about 29 million acres and extends from 25 to 200 mi (40 to 322 km) offshore. Water depths are 95 to 262 ft (29 to 80 m). It excludes nearshore acreage covering whale, marine bird and other mammal migration routes, and subsistence hunting by local communities.
The MMS estimates the area to contain 15 Bbbl of oil and 76 tcf of natural gas.
