OSLO, Norway – Equinor has permission from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) to extend the active life of the Gullfaks C platform in the North Sea until end-June 2036, in line with the duration of the production license.
In its application, Equinor said the facility could operate profitably until 2032, or further in connection with planned improved recovery projects on theGullfaks field.
The NPD agreed that there was a need to sustain operations on the Gullfaks C platform, both to recover remaining resources from the field and from other deposits in the area. In recent years the facility is being used to produce oil from the tight layers in the Shetland group and the Lista formation over Gullfaks.
Gullfaks C is one of three large Condeep concrete platforms in the field center, with integrated process facilities, drilling facilities and living quarters. It also processes and exports oil and gas from Gullfaks Sør, Gimle and Visund Sør, and production from Tordis using separate equipment.
It entered service on Jan. 1, 1990 in a water depth of 216 m (708 ft). At the time the forecast design life span was 30 years.
Statoil was appointed operator of the surrounding block 34/10 in 1978, in partnership with Norsk Hydro and Saga Petroleum. Equinor’s current partners are Petoro and OMV Norge.
