NEW ORLEANS – As Hurricane Michael makes landfall in Florida, offshore oil and gas operators continue to evacuate platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) reported that based on data from offshore operator reports submitted as of 11:00 a.m. CDT today, personnel have been evacuated from 89 production platforms. This number represents 13.0% of the 687 manned platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Personnel have been evacuated from three rigs (non-dynamically positioned), equivalent to 13.6% of the 22 non-DP rigs of this type currently operating in the Gulf.

A total of four dynamically positioned rigs have moved off location out of the storm’s path as a precaution. This number represents 23.5% of the 17 rigs of this type currently operating in the Gulf.

From operator reports, it is estimated that about 718,877 b/d or 42.3% of the current oil production in the Gulf of Mexico has been shut-in. BSEE said that it is also estimated that about 812 MMcf/d or 31.7% of the natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico has been shut-in.
