VANCOUVER, Canada – The drillship Ocean Rig Poseidon has spudded the Cormorant-1 well in the Walvis basin offshore Namibia.
Tullow Oil operates the surrounding permit PEL 37 permit. Water depth at the location is around 545 m (1,788 ft), with a planned TD of 3,830 m (12,565 ft) subsea.
According to partner Africa Energy Corp., the well will target oil in a mid-Cretaceous deep marine fan sandstone system.
Drilling and evaluation should last around 34 days.
In 2013, drilling of the Wingat-1 and Murombe-1 wells in a block south of PEL 37 confirmed mature, oil-prone source rock in the Walvis basin.
Cormorant, which could hold up to 124 MMbbl, was defined from a 3D seismic survey acquired in 2014 and is one of four similar submarine fan prospects on PEL 37.
If this well is successful, it could open up a fairway of similar dependent fans with strong resource potential across the license, Africa Energy said.
The company’s involvement is via its one-third interest in Pancontinental Namibia, which has a 30% stake in PEL 37.
ONGC Videsh and Paragon Investment Holdings are the other partners.
