KOPERVIK, Norway – Exports of Norwegian gas to Europe set a record this summer, according to the country’s offshore trunklines operator Gassco.

During May to August, the offshore gas infrastructure exported 36.8 bcm, slightly up on the same period in 2017, which was itself a record year for gas exports.

More gas is usually exported in winter months, when demand for space heating increases, but this summer’s sales were close to a typical winter’s output.

According to Gassco CEO Frode Leversund, “not only has Norway’s continental shelf delivered larger volumes than before, but the transport system has also handled these increased quantities well.”

The pipeline systems transported 117.4 bcm from Norwegian fields to mainland Europe and the UK last year, the highest volume sold in 40 years of Norwegian gas exports.

Leversund expected a similar final total for 2018.

Later this year, more supplies will be available as the new 482-km (300-mi) long, 36-in.Polarled pipeline enters service in the Norwegian Sea, as the Aasta Hansteen field comes onstream, exporting gas to the Nyhamna processing plant on the west coast.

This is the first gas pipeline on the Norwegian continental shelf to cross the Arctic Circle. It is owned by the Polarled Joint Venture, with Gassco as operator.

Gassco also operates processing plants in Norway, and terminals in Germany, Belgium, France, and the UK.
