Eni implements strengthened safety measure on Goliat platform

SANDNES, Norway – Eni Norge, in cooperation with Safetec and SINTEF, has developed a web-based tool for compiling, systematizing, and presenting safety critical information on the Goliat platform in the Barents Sea.

The system measures and monitors more than 10,600 technical components in real time.

Since 2013, Eni Norge, with design and engineering support from Safetec and SINTEF and software development from Eigen, has been working on a BSP-Barrier Status Panel tool to provide better information on the status of major accident-critical barriers.

The tool was launched officially earlier this year.

“The barrier panel gives us real-time data from the maintenance management system and control system, thus visualizing the risk image on the device at all times,” said Live Fornes, project manager for the development at Eni Norge.

“This is a phenomenal improvement over previous systems because it has dramatically increased our ability to understand which failures of safety-critical equipment have the greatest impact on major accidents, which must therefore be prioritized.”

The information can be built up in several different views and adapted to the needs of different user groups. Preliminary user feedback suggests the barrier status panel contributes to increased risk awareness, Eni Norge added, both in daily status meetings, and as decision support during work planning and approval.

“The barrier panel presents the status of security systems in a new and innovative way, giving operators a better understanding of the risk picture of a device,” said SINTEF’s project manager Knut Øien.

Barriers are defined as planned measures that will regain control or reduce the development or consequences of major accidents. They are in addition to inherent safety and control measures.
