HELSINKI, FinlandBaltic Connector Oy expects Allseas to start installing the Baltic Connector pipeline next summer between Finland and Estonia.

According to project director Tom Främling, seabed preparations will start this summer, with pipelay due to be completed in the fall of 2019, after which the next phase will be to prepare the pipeline for commercial use.

“The goal of the project is to enable the opening of the Finnish gas market in 2020,” said Herkko Plit, president and CEO.

“Constructing the Balticconnector offshore pipeline is one of the key parts in linking the Finnish and Baltic gas markets and integrating them with the EU’s common energy market.”

Baltic Connector Oy is a state-owned company set up in 2015 to implement the Finnish part of the Balticconnector gas pipeline. The EU has granted funding to cover 75% of the project.

Last week, Finnish Diving Support Oy was due to clear three explosives in the Gulf of Finland along the pipeline route, 40-42 km (25-26 mi) away from the shore in Finnish economic waters.

Removal of the explosives was not expected to cause disturbance as they were located more than 50 m (164 ft) deep.
