PORTSMOUTH, UKMagma Global will supply Tullow Oil with two 5.5-km (3.4-mi) lightweight carbon fiber composite pipe flowlines for the deepwater TEN project offshore Ghana.

The 6-in. spoolable m-pipe flowlines will be deployed from a 10-m (33-ft) dia. reel, with a total weight for the pipe and deployment package being 100 tons.

This compares with more than 500 tons, Magma Global said, for the equivalent steel flexible pipe product normally used by the industry.

Resultant weight savings mean that both flowlines can be installed from the 4,800-ton MPCV vessel, as opposed to the 14,000-ton specialist lay vessel that would normally be required.

Magma Global added that the pipes’ light weight means that shipping costs are also lower, and handling is easier. At the same time, the carbon fiber composite m-pipe is stronger, the company claimed, and does not rust in seawater or corrode with exposure to hydrogen sulfide/carbon dioxide or some aggressive chemicals involved in oil and gas production.

Martin Jones, the company’s founder and CEO, said: “Our goal is eventually to replace metallic pipes forsubsea oil and gas production in all applications, but we recognize it’s a long road in an industry which is naturally cautious with any new technologies responsible for transporting oil under water.

“That said, a number of operators are recognizing the benefits Magma’s approach and m-pipe technology can bring, not just in cost savings but in a more environmentally friendly approach that is intrinsically safer. As a result, we are seeing a significant acceleration in adoption by clients around the world in a wide range of subsea applications.”
