STAVANGER, Norway –Statoil has contracted North Atlantic Norway’s semisubmersible drilling rig West Hercules to drill two exploration wells in the Barents Sea this year.
Drilling is due to start this summer with options to extend contract to five further wells.
Estimated value of the two-well firm commitment is $15-20 million, including mob/demobilization are included in the amount, but use of ROVS and other services will incur extra charges.
“We have chosen this rig because it is winterized and ready for use in cold waters. We have used this rig before, both in the norther part of the Norwegian continental shelf and in Canada,” said Geir Tungesvik, head of drilling and well at Statoil.
Elsewhere in the Norwegian sector, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has authorized Aker BP to drill wildcat well 6507/5-8 on the KvitungenTumler prospect in license PL 212 in the Norwegian Sea, using the semisubDeepsea Stavanger.
The well location is 2 km (1.2 mi) west of the company’s Skarv field and 230 km (143 mi) west of Brønnøysund.
Drilling will start this month and continue for at least 37 days. Water depth is 408 m (1,338 ft).
