OSLO, Norway– Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) will investigate a lifeboat incident that occurred recently on the jackup Mærsk Giant, which is serving as a living quarters facility at the Yme field in the Norwegian North Sea.

The rig is equipped with conventional lowered lifeboats. During testing, one was unintentionally lowered to the sea and then drifted underneath the facility. The wire rope that the lifeboat was lowered on wore through.

Following the incident, the lifeboat drifted away fromMærsk Giant with an emergency vessel as escort. No personnel were on board the lifeboat at the time.

PSA will look to determine the sequence of events, underlying causes, actual and potential consequences, and to identify any regulatory breaches. It aims to apply any lessons learned to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
