AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – South Stream Transport has awarded supply contracts for 75,000 12-m (39.3-ft) pipes for the first South Stream gas line through the southern Black Sea.
German company EUROPIPE will manufacture 50%, while Russian pipe plants United Metallurgical Co. and Severstal will manufacture 35% and 15%, respectively. Total value of the contracts is about $1.36 billion.
South Stream’s offshore section will comprise four 931-km (578-mi) pipelines, each with a diameter of 813 mm (32 in.) and wall thickness of 39 mm (1.5 in.). The X65 steel pipes will be designed for an operating pressure of 28.45 MPa (8,702 psi) that will be exerted during the offshore section construction.
Once the required amount of pipes has been stockpiled at temporary bases on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, offshore section construction is expected to get under way this fall. The firstoffshore pipeline is scheduled to due to start operations in December 2015.
