STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Latest appraisal drilling results on the Alta field in the Barents Sea look positive, according to operator Lundin Norway.

The semisubmersibleLeiv Eiriksson has completed drilling and production testing of well 7220/11-4 (Alta-4) located in license PL609 in the southern Barents Sea, roughly 2 km (1.24 mi) south of the 7220/11-1 discovery well and 2.5 km (1.55 mi) north of Alta-3.

Alta-4 encountered a gross hydrocarbon column of 48 m (157 ft), comprising 4 m (13 ft) of gas and 44 m (144 ft) of oil in a sequence of Permian-Triassic clastic carbonate sediments.

Pressure data revealed the same fluid contacts and gradients as observed in previous wells drilled on Alta, confirming good communication across the large structure.

A production test in the oil zone flowed at a stabilized rate of 6,050 b/d with low pressure drawdown, constrained by rig testing facilities. The test confirmed good reservoir properties and lateral continuity within the Permian-Triassic clastic reservoirs.

The Leiv Eiriksson will now drill a side track 900 m (2,953 ft) north of the Alta-4 well to assist with placement of a horizontal well for an extended-well test planned for next year.

Following completion of the side track the rig will spud the Børselv prospect, also located in PL609.
