OSLO, NorwayStatoil has permission to drill two exploratory wells offshore mid-Norway and in the Barents Sea.

The Petroleum Safety Authority has sanctioned a well on the Carmen prospect in block 6507/8 in the Norwegian Sea, 10 km (6.2 mi) northeast of the Heidrun production complex and in 358 m (1,175 ft) water depth.

Odfjell’s semisubmersibleDeepsea Bergen will initially drill a pilot well to a depth of 800 m (2,624 ft), to investigate if there is shallow gas in the area. Drilling is expected to start in mid-June and last for 18 days.

Songa Offshore’s semisubSonga Enabler will drill well 7219/9-2 on production license 532 in the Barents Sea, following clearance by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

The location is roughly 23 km (14.3 mi) southwest of the 7220/8-1 discovery well.
