OSLO, Norway – Norske Shell has permission from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to withdraw an emergency response vessel from the Knarr field in the Norwegian North Sea.

Knarr, developed by former operator BG (since acquired by Shell) is in the northern part of the North Sea, around 50 km (31 mi) northeast of the Snorre complex, and features an FPSO connected to subsea wells.

Since operations started in 2015, oil has been loaded from the FPSO into tankers, while the gas heads through a pipeline to St. Fergus in the UK.

Shell performed an impact assessment which showed that the vessel could be removed while maintaining emergency preparedness performance requirements.

However, PSA has requested that Shell improve the MOB (man over board) system on the FPSO and install backup equipment for traffic monitoring on the facility.
