NPD sanctions Barents, North Sea wildcats

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has issued permits for two new exploration wells.

OSLO, Norway – The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has issued permits for two new exploration wells.

Statoil has authorization to drill well 7121/8-1 in license PL 849 in the Barents Sea, using the semisubmersible Songa Enabler.

Drilling will start after the rig completes production well 7121/4-F-3 H on license PL 099 on the Snøhvit field, 25 km (15.5 mi) to the northwest.

PL 849, awarded in February 2016 under Norway’s APA 2015 round, comprises a small part of block 7121/7 and parts of blocks 7121/8, 7121/9, and 7122/7.

NPD has also authorized Aker BP to drill well 24/9-11 S in central Norwegian North Sea license Pl 150 B, using the semisubTransocean Arctic.

This will be first well drilled on the license, which comprises parts of block 24/9. The well location is southwest of the 24/9-5 Volund field.
