PERTH, Australia – Quadrant Energy expects the Ocean Monarch rig to arrive at the Roc-2 well site in the offshore WA-437-P permit in late June or early July.

According to partnerCarnarvon Petroleum, the well is designed to delineate the extent of the Roc gas-condensate discovery, calibrate reservoir parameters, improve understanding of reservoir deliverability, and characterize fluid properties.

It will be drilled to a depth of 5,250 m (17,224 ft) with capacity to extend to 5,700 m (18,700 ft) if justified by hydrocarbon shows, reservoir quality and drilling conditions, with full wellbore coring and flow testing over the Caley sandstones.

This should push the total time taken to drill, core, and test to around 98 days.

The location is in around 100 m (328 ft) of water, 160 km (99.4 mi) northeast of Port Hedland in the Bedout sub-basin of the greater Roebuck basin offshore WesternAustralia.

Roc-1 encountered a gross reservoir section of around 120 m (393 ft) in the Caley, with the top 40 m (131 ft) hydrocarbon bearing. Roc-2 will appraise this reservoir section in an updip location, 5 km (3.1 mi) east of Roc-1.

The final well test program will be decided once Roc-2 has drilled through the Caley reservoir, but it should take around 20 days to complete.

Carnarvon adds that analysis of sidewall core samples from Roc-1 have strengthened confidence in the range of gas and condensate in place, with porosities of 14.5% for Sand 2 and 12% for Sand 4.

More importantly, permeabilities of 300-500mD in Sand 2 and 40mD in Sand 4 are better than expected, leading to expectations of positive flow rates during the planned well test.
