WEST PERTH, Australia – Denver-based MHA Petroleum Consultants have completed an assessment of the Sunbird Energy operated block 2A offshore South Africa.

The best estimate is 7.8 tcf (221 bcm) of prospective gas resources.

The 5,000-sq km (1,930-sq mi) concession is currently in year five of a 30-year production right issued by South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources.

Sunbird commissioned the assessment last October, following field development concept studies byWood Group Kenny and a grant toward a full-field development plan.

The block includes the planned Ibhubesi gas project (IGP). The aim was to identify more exploration potential for additional gas volumes for IGP.

To date, seven of the 11 wells drilled on the block have discovered commercial gas volumes.

Sunbird plans to start additional geological studies this year to identify targets for future exploration drilling based on geological certainty, prospect size, and proximity to the IGP development.
