PARIS --Bureau Veritas has entered a technical and commercial cooperation agreement with French hydrodynamics specialist HydrOcean.

The latter will provide computational fluid dynamics (CFD) services to BV’s offshore and shipping clients, with BV marketing HydrOcean’s services worldwide.

Jean-Francois Segretain, technical director, Bureau Veritas, said the CFD services can speed analysis of complex hull forms “by evaluating hundreds of designs over a wide range of load conditions in only a few weeks, and produce ship fuel consumption savings up to 10 or 15%...

“Working with HydrOcean’s powerful tools, we are no longer limited to a small number of load conditions…New vessels can now be optimized for a complete operational profile, which means genuine energy-saving over the entire working cycle of a vessel.”

The software can be applied to optimize performance of offshore hull forms with appendages and propellers, accounting for non-linear and viscous effects, with a high degree of accuracy compared with model tests, BV claims.

HydrOcean is developing its systems with the Ecole Centrale Nantes fluid dynamic laboratory, in cooperation with a team of marine numerical simulation specialists.
