STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Lundin Petroleum has spudded its latest appraisal well on the Johan Sverdrup field in the central Norwegian North Sea.
The semisubmersibleBredford Dolphin is drilling well 16/3-8S in license PL501 at the crest of the Avaldsnes High in the eastern part of the discovery.
Lundin aims to establish the depth, quality, and thickness of Permian-age Zechstein group carbonates and examine Jurassic reservoir sequences 3.9 km (2.4 mi) southeast of the discovery well 16/2-6.
The carbonates may be important to the development, both as a potentially good oil reservoir and in optimizing production planning for the overlying Jurassic oil reservoir.
Drilling is expected to last around 45 days with a planned TD of 2,025 m (6,644 ft) below mean sea level.
