STAVANGER, Norway – Statoil has rejected a $1.6-million fine from the public prosecutor for Rogaland County in western Norway.

This relates toleakage from an injection well on the Veslefrikk field in the North Sea during 2002-2009. Statoil is accused of failing to implement remote measurement to detect pollution and to take the required action.

“After a thorough evaluation we have decided not to accept this fine, because we cannot see that we, based on the case documents, have breached regulations,” said Øystein Arvid Håland, Statoil’s senior vice president for North Sea West cluster operations.
