STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Lundin Norway has completed an exploration well on the Torvastad prospect north of the Johan Sverdrup discovery in the central Norwegian North Sea.
Well 16/2-20S, drilled by the semisubmersible Island Innovator in license PL501, encountered a 24-m (79-ft) lower Cretaceous/upper Jurassic sequence with poor reservoir properties above a 14-m (46-ft) water bearing upper Jurassic Draupne sandstone sequence.
The lower Cretaceous/upper Jurassic reservoir was thicker than anticipated, and as a result the Draupne sandstone came in deeper than expected. The latter appears to be the same sequence encountered in allJohan Sverdrup wells.
Lundin and its partners Statoil and Maersk Oil have decided to use the same rig to drill a side track 770 m (2,526 ft) to the west, to investigate the potential of an up-flank continuous Draupne sandstone and to establish an oil/water contact. This is estimated to take 20 days to drill.
