WELLINGTON, New Zealand – New Zealand Oil & Gas (NZOG) has agreed to take a 50% interest from Beach Petroleum in the Clipper concession.
The location of PEP 52717 is in the Canterbury basin offshoreNew Zealand’s Canterbury coast. Beach was recently granted an extension to the permit that largely incorporates the Barque structure and a related lead, mapped to extend across the permit’s previous southern boundary.
An area of low prospectivity in the northwest of the original concession was relinquished to maintain the permit’s overall area.
The partners have committed to acquire at least 600 sq km (231 sq mi) of 3D seismic by October 2014. NZOG says there were extensive 2D seismic surveys over the Canterbury basin in the 1970s and 1980s.
In 1984 BP drilled Clipper-1, the sole well on the block to date, recovering samples of hydrocarbon gas during wireline logging from a depth of more than 4,000 m (13,123 ft).
Drilling is scheduled on an adjacent permit early next year.
