KASSEL, Germany – Wintershall has discovered oil in the Danish North Sea at the Hibonite exploration well (5504/1-3).

The structure is in license 5/06, 278 km (173 mi) west of Esbjerg, and about 7 km (4.3 mi) north of the Ravn oil field, which Wintershall successfully appraised in 2009 with theRavn-3 well.

In both structures the reservoir is formed by upper Jurassic Heno sandstones. Wintershall estimates potential in-place oil at 100 MMbbl.

The company will assess the commercial value of the new find and consider further upside potential. It could be developed jointly with Ravn.

Hibonite-1 was drilled by the jackupNoble George Sauvageau to a TD of 4,431 m (14,536 ft) vertically below sea level, in a water depth of 52 m (170 ft). Cores were taken and logging was performed, with oil and gas flowing during a production test.

Two side tracks, Hibonite-1A and Hibonite-1B, also confirmed the presence of oil- bearing sandstone in the late Jurassic.

The rig will transfer to nearby license 4/06a to drill another exploration well for Wintershall, Spurv-1.
