KASSEL, Germany -- Wintershall Noordzee has discovered further oil while appraising the 1986 Ravn discovery in the Danish North Sea.
Ravn-3, spudded in September by the jackup Noble George Sauvageau in 48 m (157 ft) water depth, was drilled as a slanted well, reaching TVD of 4,469 m (14,662 ft) in Triassic-age layers. It successfully proved hydrocarbon-bearing sandstones on Upper Jurassic age and flowed oil during a production test.
Ravn is in License 5/06 on the westernmost fringe of the Danish sector. The previous license holder exited the permit in 1987 after drilling a second well, deeming the find sub-economic. The current licensees (Wintershall, Bayengas, EWE, and Nordsofonden) plan to evaluate the latest results to determine whether commercial production is feasible.
