NEW DELHI, India -- ONGC (NSE: ONGC, BSE: 500312) has discovered gas in the GK-42-1 prospect off northeast India.
The discovery was in 30 m (98 ft) water depth in the Kutch block 1 extension nomination block, around 50 km (31 mi) from Okha Port in Gujarat.
Drilling started on Dec. 31, and the well was drilled to a depth of 1,470 m (4,823 ft). During testing, gas flowed from the 1,372-1,369 m (4,501-4,491 ft) interval in the Palaeocene Nakhatrana formation.
Another interval in the Jakhau formation on the MDT also delivered gas. ONGC has yet to perform testing of this formation, however.
The company says this latest find, south of the GK-28 discovery, should encourage further exploration in the region.
Elsewhere offshore India, ONGC’s board has approved advancement of development of the C-23, C-26, and B-12-1 fields for a capital cost of 2592.17 Crore.
This will involve construction of three wellhead platforms, associated facilities and pipeline, drilling and completion of eight wells, and conversion of the 1981-vintage drilling rigSagar Pragati to a mobile offshore production unit (MOPU).
ONGC is aiming for start-up prior to the 2014 monsoon season instead of 2018 as envisaged earlier. It estimated cumulative gas and condensate production from this project at 16.67 bcm (589 bcf) and 2.81 MMcm (17.66 MMbbl) by 2024-25.
