ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands – Fairstar Heavy Transport has won two contracts to provide marine transportation services for the Ichthys LNG project off northern Australia.
These were awarded by the JKC joint venture between Chiyoda and KBR.
Fairstar will provide its two 50,000 dwt, open stern, semisubmersible vesselsForte and Finesse for a period of around 12 months each, starting in 2Q 2014.
The total value of the two contracts is $56 million for the initial period. JKC has an option to extend both by a further six months at the same voyage rates agreed to in the initial period.
The vessels will undertake a series of voyages from various fabrication yards in the Asia Pacific region, transporting the modules required for construct of the two LNG trains at the Ichthys LNG project site in Darwin.
Philip Adkins, CEO of Fairstar, said the vessels “are two of the most modern, open stern, semisubmersible ships in the world today. They have fully independent and redundant propulsion systems as well as a powerful ballast system capable of safely maintaining equilibrium at quayside throughout the extreme tidal cycle that will be a feature of discharge operations in Darwin.”
The Ichthys LNG project is a joint venture between operator INPEX and Total. Gas from the Ichthys field in the Browse basin, 200 km (124 mi) off Western Australia, will undergo preliminary processing offshore to remove water and extract condensate.
The gas will then be exported to onshore processing facilities in Darwin via an 889-km (552-mi) subsea pipeline. Ichthys LNG should produce 8.4 MM metric tons/year (9.25 MM tons/year) of LNG and 1.6 MM metric tons/year (1.76 MMt/year) of LPG, along with 100,000 b/d of condensate at peak.
