HAMBURG, Germany – Hansa Heavy Lift has transported a carousel with eight reels weighing a total of 3,508.7 metric tons (3,867 tons) from Newcastle, northeast England to Lagos, Nigeria.
The consignment is destined forTotal’s deepwater Egina oil field development.
Hansa’sHHL Lagos was first mobilized in Rotterdam to be fitted with additional deck strength for the carousel, which weighed more than 2,200 metric tons (2,425 tons) including spooled product and had a diameter of over 25 m (82).
Close connection between Hansa’s engineering team, superintendents and vessels crew allowed for a fast deck reinforcement through the installation of additional under-deck stiffeners and a spooling platform, said project engineer Tom Kröger, with the company’s naval architects performing calculations to assess the vessel’s structural integrity.
In addition, specially designed shim-plates were installed on the deck to support installation contractor Saipem with accommodation of the carousel.
Saipem in cooperation with Hansa, had installed the empty carousel and associated equipment on the vessel before it sailed to Newcastle, where cargo spooling took place.
On arrival at Lagos, Hansa and Saipem co-operated to achieve double banking with the offshore construction vesselNormand Maximus to unspool the products from the carousel.
