COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Woodside Energy Ltd. has awarded Maersk Contractors a drilling contract by for a deepwater development semisubmersible to operate offshore Australia. The three-year contract will begin when the rig arrives in Australia in 2Q 2009.

The semisubmersible is the second in a series of three advanced deepwater development semis under construction for Maersk Contractors in Singapore. The rig design is based on experience gained from Maersk Contractors' latest newbuild deepwater semiMaersk Explorer, although the design for the new rig is substantially larger and more sophisticated, Maersk says.

The new semi is capable of drilling to a depth of 10,000 m (30,000 ft). This makes the rig well suited to drill deep and technically complicated wells such as those off the northwest coast of Australia. The rig is able to operate in water depths to 3,000 m (10,000 ft) and can maintain its station either in dynamic positioning (DP) mode or with a pre-laid mooring system. The rig has onboard accommodations for 180.
