LONDONNeptune Energy has joined the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, supporting development of the European Union’s hydrogen strategy.

The alliance, formed last week with support from industry, public authorities and civil society, is part of the EU’s strategy to help Europe to become carbon neutral by 2050.

According to Neptune, the Netherlands is well placed to lead development of a hydrogen economy, due to the proliferation of wind energy and existing infrastructure both in the Dutch sector of the North Sea and onshore for transporting gas and hydrogen molecules.

Neptune’s PosHYdon project will use offshore wind turbines to power a pilot hydrogen plant on the company’s electrified Q13a platform 13 km (8.1 mi) offshore in the North Sea. This will convert seawater to demineralized water and then to hydrogen via electrolysis.

Lex de Groot, the company’s managing director in the Netherlands, said: “Hydrogen offers a solution to lower emissions in many hard-to-abate sectors, such as steel and heavy-duty transport. It can provide long-term energy storage at scale, support improvements in air quality and strengthen energy security…

“We see strong opportunities for hydrogen to play an important role in future energy supply.”
