The UK Government awarded Shell UK Ltd. (Shell) two licenses in the UK continental shelf's 22nd offshore licensing round. Both are in the deepwater Atlantic area West of Shetland and total eight blocks. One is a new 'frontier' license with BP as partner and the other is a traditional license with BP, ChevronTexaco, and Faroe Petroleum as partners. Shell will be operator in both licenses.
"The complex geology, deepwater, and difficult sea and weather conditions make the Atlantic margin a challenging area to develop and operate. However, Shell has immense experience in high-risk environments, which will allow us to maximize the chances of unlocking the potential in these areas," said Rien Herber, exploration director of Shell Exploration and Production in Europe.
The licenses awarded to Shell include:
• Shell UK Ltd. with BP Exploration as partner – blocks 213/18, 213/19, 213/20 (Part), 213/24, 214/11, 214/16 (Part), and 214/17
• Shell UK Ltd. with BP Exploration, ChevronTexaco, and Faroe Petroleum as partners – blocks 213/20 (Part), 213/25c, and 214/16 (Part).
