OTC.10: System enables real time pipe telemetry

A new real time drill pipe telemetry system from Reelwell not only enables two-way, high-speed data communication with MWD/LWD tools, but also can transfer electric power to downhole tools.

HOUSTON -- A new real time drill pipe telemetry system from Reelwell not only enables two-way, high-speed data communication with MWD/LWD tools, but also can transfer electric power to downhole tools. This combination has landed Reelwell an OTC Spotlight Award.

Based on dual concentric drillstrings, the system has a unique stab-in connector mounted in the drill pipe toolboxes and a transceiver to pass data. This connector provides electrical insulation, high-pressure seal, and low-impedance electrical contact, says Reelwell. The power supply capability exceeds that required for signal transmission for all existing sensor or directional drilling tools.

Because no parts protrude from the drill pipe, it can be handled like any other drill pipe. The transceiver optimizes signal transmission and sent data is made redundant by both duplication and interleaving, says Reelwell, making the system immune to noise sources.

The system originally was developed for Reelwell’s Drilling Method that uses the dual drill pipes as electrical conductors. In practice, the system can benefit conventional drilling, too.
