Riser response estimation method improves fatigue life

HOUSTON –Accurate and consistent estimation of riser response to global and local external loading is essential. Toward this end, a method of efficiently calculating irregular wave stress time histories of tensile armor wires for flexible risers has been developed.

Speaking to DOT International today, Krassy Doynov of ExxonMobil Development Co. said this new system calculates stress time histories directly from the global loads generated by commercially available analysis tools.

"The methodology elevates the dynamic analysis of flexible risers from the conventional regular-wave approach to irregular-wave time-domain approach," Doynov said. "In turn, this allows a better assessment of the fatigue performance and provides a better fit-for-service assessment."

In application, Doynov said, this irregular wave approach has provided significant fatigue-life improvement for the flexible riser tensile wire in many deepwater West Africa applications.
